Introducing The Physician

In October of 2017 I purchased a hobo nickel from Chris Dempsey. I immediately noticed that this was a match to two that were submitted to the BoTales, “Three’s a Match” section in 2012. The artist has crafted the classic subject but the outcome displays a quite unique professional looking gentleman with a broad face and shoulders to match. Due to his appearance I’ve decided to nickname him “The Physician.”

The Carving Characteristics for "The Physician" are listed as follows:

1. Derby hats with vertically lined bands, wide cut indented brims, and texturing on two examples.
2. Deeply engraved ears.
3. Punched head and facial hair including eyebrows.
4. Cleaned neck.
5. Mild profile alteration
6. Collar, lapel, and shoulder, and simple tie.
7. LIBERTY fully and partially left intact
8. Well-dressed fields, one with heavy stippling, one with mild stippling, and one with none.
9. All engraving is done with wider round graver.
10. All subjects look husky.
11. Full, partial and no dates are evident.
