Footnote:   When Puck was still a young'n he was kicked in the head by his neighbor's mule.
It wasn't a pretty sight!  While Puck was never a “cute” kid, you could now say;
“He had been beat with an Ugly Stick.”  He did recover from the injury but, since he was kicked
while snoop'n round the neighbor's still, he never again got thirsty for a taste of moonshine.
Puck ain't as bright or personable as Bear, not that Bear was the sharpest tool
in the shed, but the two make a pair that don't get messed with! • Johnny

Footnote:   John's dad was telling him that he had a Uncle on the Boeglin side
that everybody called “Bogie” because of his name... even though Boeglin is pronounced “Bay-glen”.
As observed previously... life just doesn't always work out as one would expect.   It sure does “look” like “Bo-glin”!

Carving by John Schipp
Heinrich is Grandma Mary Jo's baby brother who came along when she had already started her own family so she generally raised him right along with her own kids. He is the brother-in-law who, as Grandpa Leroy not so diplomatically always put it; “came to dinner and never left.” He has NEVER missed a dinner... or any other meal!
The adults in the family all call him “Uncle Heinrich”, the kids in the family all call him “Uncle Yogi”, his work friends and drinking buddies always call him “Bear” and the local constabulary just call him when they need HELP!!! Very Special Deputy Boeglin tips the scales at an even 25 stone and stands a solid “five foot seventeen”, so he is of considerable help when he sets his mind to it.
With a name like “Boeglin” you would think that everyone would have picked up on the obvious moniker of “Bo” but life is funny that way... clearly “Bear” was so apropos that it simply blew all the other possible candidates away!
Postscript:   John just sent along this sketch,
from the character development phase of Bear's creation,
in which he had him proudly sporting his deputy badge.
Neither of us knew the other was giving Bear a job
in the Sheriff's Department!
As an aside... my Dad had a life-long friend who stood “five foot seventeen”.
He went by the moniker “Tiny” all his life.   Honest!
Well, except for us kids who called him Mr. Shields. ~ V-Dubya
