OHNS Strives to be G-Rated and Family Oriented
Despite nearly two decades of performance proving our dedication to this goal we came under fire recently because of the spate of adult theme carved nickels being offered for sale on the online eBay auction site. Since eBay operates under the free enterprise system there is virtually nothing that OHNS can do to influence what individual sellers offer in that venue.
eBay has a vague set of guidelines for items that should be listed as Adult items and a mechanism for the viewing public to report items that they feel should have been listed in that category and weren't. Recently four items were reported and all four got moved to Adult. The next time, five items were reported and only one got moved to Adult. So... it all boils down to a matter of differing opinions.
The best solution is for each individual eBay user to customize their eBay searches so that items which they find offensive simply do not get returned by their queries. That way you are not dependent on someone else's moral compass to guide your life's journey.
Assuming you already have an eBay search...
1) Run your search.
2)→ Click on the advanced
link behind [Search].
3)← Select Only show items from: box.
4)← Select Exclude option.
5)← Fill in one (or more) seller eBayIDs.
6)→ Click on [Search].
7)← Once the search completes, right click your mouse in an open background area to obtain the popup option list containing [Create Shortcut] and [Add to Favorites...] and select whichever you prefer.
You can do this modification to as many of your searches as it applies to of course. Save the altered searches, blow away the originals and you are in business. Your BEST tool for influencing what nickel carvings are created is your checkbook... vote with your checkbook! ~ V-Dubya

My name is Mike Rothwell and I live in Northeast Iowa just about on the IA/MN line in a small town called Burr Oak. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote quite a bit about her time living here back in her day. Now, we have a museum dedicated to her and her time here and it's very interesting! If any of your viewers would be interested, they can learn about our museum here.
Regarding our clocks...I say our, because none of what I do is without the love, encouragement and technical/creative support from time to time from my lovely wife, Joy! She once was a commercial artist, but a serious accident set her back in her prime. Since that time many years ago, we do everything together--including designing our unique clocks!!
CoinClocks™ officially began in October 28, 2007 when I celebrated my first sale on eBay with a delighted customer! Funny thing there is, that was my very first clock. I was very inexperienced at Photoshop and had no idea on how to lay out the numbers on the dial. Much of it was guessing! I knew nothing on a LOT of things about Photoshop. That clock and those that followed over the next year, I jokingly refer to as my TYPE I CoinClocks™! As my proficiency with Photoshop improved and I was learning new skills, my designs also began to noticeably improve, meanwhile, selling several on eBay and maintaining a 100% positive feedback score.
Fast forward to today: My designs have only gotten better and we recently began branding with our new LOGO, which also, Joy was very instrumental in helping me design!
We sell maybe four or five of our clocks a month and it's certainly not for money that we do this, but for our passion for the simple joy of coins! I have collected all my life and my wife has only learned the true appreciation of beautiful coins since her accident. We focus rather on the uniqueness of our clocks and how they are a nice item for those who are lucky enough to catch me when I do list on eBay. (That's the only place I've ever marketed my clocks so far.) I always offer to do custom requests, but this Steve Cox original I purchased a few years back is my first at doing a Hobo nickel and I thought would be a nice offering for that lucky someone who may win my auction for Steve's (my) coin!
As far as my Flash clock version, I taught myself Flash to create my clock ticking online. It is accurate in any time zone, plus the large size flash image is much more highly detailed and more accurately represents the clock, much as it would look in person as opposed to just posting a picture. The neat thing about my Flash clocks are that they can be quickly and easily resized for use on any website! Now, I can offer my CoinClocks™ for online use as well, thanks to Flash.
For information, please feel free to drop me an email! Mike Rothwell, at

Ten Amazing Jack O'Lanterns
Ray Villafane Is a Pumpkin Carving Master
Written by: Dan Evon
Zipper Head Jack O'Lantern
Gourdanimo Jack O'Lantern
When it comes to pumpkin carving, Ray Villafane is the Michael Jordan, the Tiger Woods, the Edward Scissor Hands of his craft. Villafane's Jack O'Lanterns have mesmerized people for years, and they just keeps getting better.
Here are some of the best pumpkin sculptures / Jack O'Lanterns, that Ray Villafane has created.
To me you carve a pumpkin to transform it into something that's alive. I'm so obsessive, when I get into something, forget it, I don't go to sleep. I stay up all night. I keep doing it. − Villafane
The most intricate pumpkin model that I have designed is the Zipperhead model, which took the best part of a day. Otherwise, the models take a couple of hours. − Villafane

Centennial of
Carving Hobo Nickels from
Buffalo Nickels
2013 will mark the Centennial Celebration of not only the Buffalo nickel but also 100 years that carvers have used that nickel design to rework into many different styles of this folk art. With this said, I have carved the very first Centennial Hobo Nickel with hopes of inspiring other carvers to make their own versions to be shown in a future Centennial Celebration edition of BoTales. We are all exceptionally fortunate to be actively involved during the renaissance of this art form. Thanks so much... Cinco de Arturo

The Hobo Nickel Studio ~ Steve Van Dyke
This shows you how to construct a little photography aid I call the Hobo Nickel Studio. It's inspired by Roland Baptiste's clever idea of turning an empty milk jug into a mini-macro studio. He noted that they're made of a thin, translucent plastic that makes a good light diffuser.
Here's how you use the Hobo Nickel Studio.

5 October 2010 Hoboken Nickels Marked Soldiers' Last Days in U.S.
−by Tom Culhane of Union, NJ as published in Numismatic News' Letters dated October 5, 2010
Tom Culhane is a professional numismatist who was a friend of Dave Wilson's, LM32, prior to his death. Tom had promised Dave to do this article quite some time ago but he took a while to get to it.
Airplane View of Camp Merritt 1919
While today's collectors like to refer to carved nickels as Hobo nickels and associate them with the Depression of the 1930s, there was an earlier group of men we should remember and honor who had a few laughs with their Hoboken nickels before going off to fight the Great War.

THE KAISER'S HEAD ON U.S. NICKELS! June 1918 Collectors frequently have brought to their attention coins on which the device has been altered by someone skilled in the use of engravers' tools, giving the piece a humorous or satirical effect. The present type of nickel seems to offer a splendid field for these artists to display their ability, and some ludicrous specimens have been turned out. The latest of these alterations, according to the New York Times, is one on which the head of the Indian has been transformed into the head of the Kaiser by the addition of a spiked helmet. an upturned mustache and a close-fitting uniform, with other slight alterations. Some of the altered coins have been found in circulation in Hoboken, N.J., and the Department of Justice has been asked to apprehend the distributors. The Numismatist, Vol. 31, page 257. A 7,251.53 mile trip from Southern England, United Kingdom ... WOW!
Bert is a modern reproduction of a hobo nickel. Originally, these little coins were carved on indian head nickels by hobos in the years of the Great Depression. They were often used in exchange for a meal or train ride, etc. This one was created by the owner from a pretty poor condition 1936 coin. My current goal is to travel from the UK back to the USA and eventually visit all 50 states. In the meantime traveling the world is fine so long as he eventually makes it across the Atlantic to America. Please help Bert to make it back to the USA and visit every State in the Union. ~ Marcus Hunt

Carved Kennedy Half Dollars/Turkeys Researched

Lot#47 Richard Milhous Nixon #1
Richard Milhous Nixon #2 Casting
We have now learned that this carver did carve more than one Nixon carving. Shown here are close-ups of precisely the same area of both the "eyes closed" carving (←) sold in 2001 and the "eyes open" casting (→) just now acquired in 2010. What we don't know is why a casting was made of the truant Nixon carving... perhaps the original was sent as a gift to a museum or to Tricky Dick himself and the carver kept a cast copy for themselves. That is a pretty common thing for an engraver to do when carving the bust of a public figure.

Captured on eBay for $19 and done by the carver of this carving →
Shown at the bottom of page 14 in Steve Alpert's OHNS GuideBook and sold in the 2010 OHNS FUN Auction as lot 25 for $165.
Quote from lot 25... [ The excessive use of power tools created a washed-out appearance of this otherwise above average carving.
Though both examiners classify this as a modern carving, the consigner obtained it in 1987 as part of a collection of old hobo nickels. ] * A.K.A.: Art Cinco de Arturo DelFavero.
