OHNS Auction #30 lots

Lot 1 - The Worrier

Classic: Average(H) 1913 T2 F/VF

Homrighaus/Banks: Carving with engraved "Ish Kabibel," a Yiddish phrase that translates to "I should worry," on the obverse. Although numerous hobo nickel carvers engraved this on their carvings, the bearded character on this particular nickel has been identified as the work of an artist nicknamed "The Worrier." In addition to the diagnostic characteristics noted by the first examiner, this example has a straight hat brim rounded on both ends, accent lines across the crown, and a tall, outlined collar. The beard on this example has a punched beard rather than one done with a liner tool. The bow is also somewhat different and there is no crow's foot suggesting that his may be an earlier work. Carvings with engraved words are much less common than carvings without them. A nice carving for the grade. QD 23-BH-01

***Lot 73 - "Mine Hair"

Classic: Below Ave/BelowAve(H) 1917 XF

Homrighaus/Banks: This Classic carving was one of five with similar diagnostic markers used to nickname "Mine Hair." The rough fields and backwards hat brim point to the limited artistic skills of this carver. This may also be an earlier or quickly done example. QD 23-BH-14

***Lot 74 - "Wild Man"

Classic: Average(H)/Average 1928 F

Homrighaus/Banks: Presently, this is a fairly scarce carving by an unknown Classic carver nicknamed "Wild Man." Wild Man's carvings vary considerably, on this example the head has been reduced in size, the profile deeply notched in front of the eye producing a severe angle to the nose, and a deeply punched eye with a crow's foot added create a wild look, all characteristic of this carver. The fields above and behind the head have been wire brushed rather than dressed with pebbly finish. The collar and shoulder are outlined. QD 23-BH-10

***Lot 75 - Uncle Sam,/h2>

Modern: Superior 1936 XF

Banks/Homrighaus: This Uncle Sam carving is one of a number of different characters carved by the late Arturo DelFavero/Cinco de Arturo. This modern carving shows the high-relief and bold engraving characteristic of Arturo's carvings. His attention to detail can be seen in the skillfully placed stars on the hatband and the details and placement of the ear. This exceptional carving has beautifully dressed fields and bright surfaces. Signed "CdA" on the reverse. QD 23-MB-19
